The judges’ citation reads “The strong composition and planar control, allied to an assured choice of materials, has created a calm presence on the quayside of this elegant civic extension.”

Best CulturalThe works were carried out on an extremely difficult yet spectacular site, by the Town’s historic bridge over the River Shannon and the Catholic Church of St. Peter & St. Paul.

It involved the adaptation of the historic 1897 Father Matthew Hall into a new gallery, with a new contemporary wing added to provide temporary white box gallery spaces and a river gallery overlooking the Shannon.

Enveloped in natural stone, the building ‘floats’ on a plinth to give spectacular views of the Shannon.
